melody blue spix macaw; https://www.bioguiden.se,

da.jpgAfter a long time filled with speculation and worry Brazilians and German conservationists managed to successfully reintroduce a grouping of couples back to their natural habitat. Their story is inspirational but also rife with jealousies and backbiting.

The first obstacle was to get enough birds to trade. The macaws were monogamous, therefore it was important to ensure that the pairs were well-matched.

Range

A South African couple is working to save the critically endangered Spix's macaw, which was declared extinct in 2000 after years of poaching and loss of habitat. They have a small number of the birds in captive, and are hoping to release them into the wild near Curaca. They refer to the birds as little blue companions, and compare their experience with the story of Presley, the only known Spix's Macaw in wild. They call him as a true survivor who lost his family, but was loyal to the region. They consider their lives in the Caatinga as akin to his and feel a deep connection with him.

Researchers were able to study the behavior of the Spix's Macaw wild, and better understand the reasons why this species has survived so long. Researchers were able to estimate the population of this unique bird with greater accuracy. Researchers were able to gather crucial information on the bird's daily movements and seasonal adaptation to drought, and food habits. Researchers also monitored attempts to reproduce using the hybrid Illiger's and Spix's macaw couple, which was a crucial step in the recovery for this species.

It was a remarkable feat that this bird managed to endure and thrive in the wild despite an insufficient gene pool and it has helped scientists understand how these birds can be returned to the wild. The bird's survival has inspired people to take action to save other species of endangered parrots. Zoos are also encouraged to develop their own captive breeding program for these exotic bird species.

This group serves as a model for how conservation groups and other organizations can collaborate to protect endangered species of wildlife and animals. It brings Brazilian governmental officials, zoo representatives as well as international owners of this rare bird, and ornithologists with a common goal - the recovery of the Spix's macaw.

The working group has already completed a great deal of work. This includes preparing a plan to reintroduce the bird in the wild. The group also raised funds to fund community outreach as well as field research and captive-bred birds for the project. The group has also set up an ongoing committee to oversee the recovery of the bird.

Habitat

Endangered by poaching and habitat destruction, the Spix's macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii) was believed to be extinct in the wild 10 years ago. Aviculturists, ornithologists and other experts continue to do their best to save this iconic bird back from the brink extinction.

The Spix's macaw keycaps is recognizable to millions around the world due to a cult animated film and two sequels. But this is only the tip of the iceberg on the long journey of returning these birds. For decades, an international team has been working to breed and reintroduce Spix's macaws raised in a captive environment back into the wild.

The Spix's Macaw is an indigenous species that is found in a small area of northeast Brazil called the Caatinga. This arid area is home to flat savannah scrubland, scattered with galleries and seasonal streams. It was first documented in 1819, and is one of the lesser-known Neotropical parrots, with only sporadic sightings from the wild, a few captive birds and some museum specimens.

To preserve the dwindling population An international committee was formed that gathered aviculturists who were the last to hold the birds and government officials. The group formed a partnership with the world-renowned non-profit organisation Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP) of Qatar to establish a rigorous program to reintroduce captive-bred Spix's macaws into their native environment in northeast Brazil.

AWWP has bought and is restoring 2,380 acres of prime habitat in Caatinga near Curaca, Brazil. AWWP also breeds and rears birds that will be released in the wild. This will create a genetically-pure source of animals for the future generations.

Spix's Macaws are typically found in trees, and rarely seen on the ground. They usually nest in hollows or holes in trees and hunt for fruit seeds, nuts, seeds and other plants. They can spend as much as 1/3 of their time in the nest.

A local community was recruited as part of the field team in order to help identify Spix's Macaws. The members of the community were given watches that could be activated in the event the Spix's Macaw was detected, allowing them to keep an eye on the birds and their daily movements in the wild. This approach has been extremely successful.

Diet

The Spix's Macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii) is the only species of the Genus Cyanopsitta. The International Union for Conservation of Nature declared that it was extinct in the wild on April 1, 2019. This was in the wake of the last wild parrot disappeared in 2000 and no additional birds were observed in subsequent surveys. However, a reintroduction project is in the process of trying to bring back this critically endangered bird to its natural home in the Caatinga.

This region in northeast Brazil covers approximately 10% of the country. Spix's Macaws nestled in the hollows old caraibeiras, and were also known to eat nuts and seeds.

b.jpegReintroduction of the Spix’s macaw parrot cost into the wild is currently underway. Eight birds raised in captivity were released into the wild in June and 12 more are scheduled to follow in 2022. They will be joined by Blue-winged Macaws, which have been reintroduced to the same area and will assist to share knowledge about food sources and nesting and roosting locations.

The reintroduction program has already collected vital biological data about the behavior of this unique bird, including information on the patterns of movement throughout the day and the seasonal changes to drought. It has also provided an insight into the natural history of the Spix's severe macaw and helped to better determine the causes that led to its extinction in the wild.

Spix's Macaws consume the seeds, fruits, and nuts of many plants that are native to the Caatinga Biome. Pinhao-bravo, linhas Brazil and facheiro (Pilosocereus Pachycladus) are all part of this diet. The acai palm (Acaia olive) and mofumbo (Combretum léprosum) fruits are also edible.

Like all parrots like all parrots Macaws are highly social birds, and they have a close bond with their parents. They are vocal and often mimic human speech and other sounds. They make a mating call known as the "whichaka," which is described as a brief continuous grating sound similar to a flute note. They are known to fly fast and high when they are in the mood to breed.

Breeding

Spix's Macaws are extremely intelligent and social birds. They communicate with each other with a variety of screeching and squawking sounds. Like many other parrots, mimic human speech. They also have a rigid daily routine, ranging from the flight path to bathing habits and can identify members of their flock. This is why they are the most sought-after pets and targets for illegal trade in birds.

In the early 1980s, only three Spix's Macaws were left in the wild, and all of them poached. A plan to pair the last male and female was foiled in 1995, when poachers killed both birds. Since since then, all Spix's Macaws known have been captive-bred – mostly in Brazil.

The few Spix's macaws that are in captivity are a mix of individuals who are the descendants of only two individuals, which makes them susceptible to illness and other environmental challenges. The majority of Spix's macaws in captivity live at an breeding center in Germany. However, this year, an agreement between a German conservation center and Brazilian government expired and the possibility of repatriation or their reintroduction into the wild in doubt.

Despite their precarious numbers, captive-bred Spix's macaws are showing signs of improvement. This was evident when a Swiss breeder was able to beat a sheikh in Qatar to buy from a collector three Spix's Macaws that were not part of the breeding program.

As a result of this and other efforts, the captive-bred birds are beginning reproduce, but not at a rapid rate. Reintroducing them to the wild will require them to remain healthy and produce. It is important to choose the right birds before release. The macaws should be reproductive and be paired up with siblings or close relatives.

It may be difficult to bring the Spix's Macaw back to the wild, but it is vital to try. ABC and its partners have established a reserve system to protect the last remaining habitats of this species. The eight Spix's macaws that were released recently will be joined by the blue-winged Macaws. These macaws are common in Caatinga, and they live in areas where the Spix’s macaws are also. These savvy birds will help the macaws become more accustomed to the region, and they will provide safety in numbers.
