The STR has been battling to remove content from textbooks that describe evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. This is only one example of how the concept of development has evolved.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings, which can cause variations in genes, or even entire genomes. Over the course of many generations, these changes can result in the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages survive and reproduce more than those with less advantageous traits. In time, this disparity in reproduction could result in the creation of completely new species.

The term "evolution" originates from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed in both science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into a new species. The term"transmutation" was coined by the Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species change into new species in a gradual and predictable manner.

Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process through which living organisms develop traits to improve their chances of living or conceiving offspring. In time, this genetic variability can cause the emergence of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the same population. Such a variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to the next generation.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the tests of time and thousands of scientific studies however, creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial to argue that it should not be taught in school. OECs are not as well-known, but they are as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern science shunned miracles in fear that they would lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their view "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." In this belief system, God creates the original species and then allows them to evolve over time. Eventually, these evolutionary changes will result in new species similar to the original ones.

Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, known as the Great Flood. They believe that the first species were all created at the same time and that they evolved gradually afterward. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.

In general, creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by a myriad of professional associations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curriculum.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they would eliminate references to evolution in their editions. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to an audience of several thousand.
