The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean, not a concrete tank.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that are close to their family members until they die.
