What Are Coffee Beans?

Origin
Coffee is a drink made from the seeds that have been roasted (beans) of the coffee plant. The beans are among the most sought-after and lucrative international commodities. The most well-known origin story of coffee starts in Ethiopia with a goatherder named Kaldi. He observed that the bright red berries produced by certain coffee plants made his goats more energetic. Kaldi shared his findings with an abbot from a nearby monastery who made a drink using the berries. The energizing effect of the berries spread from there.

Robusta is predominantly in Africa and Indonesia, and is usually less expensive than arabica. Apart from the major varieties, there are a variety of smaller, specialty beans that are a mix of robusta and arabica. During the process of roasting, beans lose their moisture, which could result in them becoming bitter and stale. To prevent this from happening, it is important to use only fresh, premium beans for your coffee.
