Lolita’s Personality

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, promised to come up with an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that connect with their family members until death. After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea and she will be able to swim deep in the water and possibly even be being reunited with her mother orca. These plans were too late to save the whale that died on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
