It is essential that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw does not feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They should spend at least 2 to 3 hours every day outside to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning new tricks. They also love playing in parks and playgrounds while hiking, and also visiting local restaurants and bars. They are not only a great pet but they are also a great companion for children.

Despite their adorable nature, these birds are very loud and can be a distraction to those living near. They can be heard making ear-splitting calls and screeches that can be a nuisance to those living in apartments or condos.

Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means that males and females are hard to distinguish. Due to this the only way to determine sex is through DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is determined, breeding can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. This isn't a simple process, and it is crucial that the owner is patient and realizes that this isn't something to be undertaken lightly. Positive reinforcement can help to speed up the process and can help to correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita Blue & Gold Macaw (Menwiki.Men) to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her were hopeful that Lolita would have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to the sea.

Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They harm her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, promised to come up with an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that connect with their family members until death. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for 40 years. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild.
