The aroma of freshly roasted beans fills the air as you enter this West Village shop. Open bags of dark-brown beans are displayed on the shelves alongside sugar jars as well as coffee-making equipment and tea accessories.

Porto Rico, originally opened in 1907 by Italian immigrant Patsy Albonese. At the time, Greenwich Village was seeing an increase in Italian immigrants who had opened businesses to meet their culinary requirements. Albanese named her shop after the renowned Puerto Rican coffee she imported (and sold) which was that was so popular at the time that even the Pope took a sip.

Porto Rico offers 130 different kinds of beans, including those from around the world in three locations, including Bleecker Street, Essex Market and online. The company also roasts their own beans and offers wholesale distribution to 350 restaurants in NYC, Brooklyn and Brooklyn.

Peter Longo, current owner and president, grew up in the family bakery located on Bleecker Street, where his father was the owner of Porto Rico. He continues to operate the business in the same manner as his father and grandfather.

Sey Coffee

It is located along Grattan Street in Morgantown, Brooklyn's Bushwick neighborhood, Sey Coffee is both a coffee shop and roaster. Tobin Polk, Lance Schnorenberg and their 33-year-old co-founders began roasting coffee in the loft on the fourth floor just around the corner in the year 2011. They called it Lofted Coffee. Local clients included Greenpoint's Budin, and Soho cart services Peddler and Peddler.

Sey's focus on buying micro-lots, or even whole harvests, from farmers who are one has earned it the respect of New York City coffee enthusiasts. Last year they made a 6-bag micro-lot purchase of Danilo Dones Sitio Catucai 785 from Brazil's Espirito Santo region. The beans were harvested at their peak ripeness and steamed to remove any imperfections. They were then dried on the farm after a 36-hour dry fermentation. The result is a blend that is a little the melon and berry.

Sey's commitment goes beyond its shop to improve the overall health of staff and farmers, as well as its customers. It makes use of composts and biodegradable disposables to ensure that waste is kept out of the landfills. This helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and also nourish the soil. The shop utilizes a La Marzocco Modbar and the cups, plates and bowls are designed by Wurtz ceramics, a father-and-son studio located in Horsens. In a recent Q&A interview with Atlanta Coffee Shops, General Manager Ian Walla reveals that La Cabra serves around 250 different coffees a year, and usually has seven or eight different varieties available at any given time.

The Roasting Plant Coffee

The Roasting Plant is the only multi-unit coffee retailer that roasts on-site and brews to order, with each cup of coffee roasting and brewed to your specifications in less than minutes. It searches the globe for the highest quality specialty beans that are sourced directly, giving customers choice and quality.

Their on-site roaster is a fluid bed machine, which is different from traditional drum machines that are used in UK coffee shops. The beans are blown about in an enclosed box heated by high-speed air, which keeps the beans suspended and allows roasting to happen at a consistent rate throughout the machine.

I tried the Sumatran coffee and it was rich with an enveloping mouthfeel, dark chocolate aromas were present, and the coffee began to cool down as you sipped, subtle flavours of citrus fruit were detected.

The coffee is transported to the Eversys super-automatic brewing machines and the coffee is brewed according to your preferences in just a few minutes. Customers can choose from nine single origins as well as several blends.

Imagine it as a tasting room for breweries. You can smell and taste the ground beans, from chocolaty to earthy (one was almost tomato-like!). They're away from the main roads, but worthwhile to visit.
