Transponder Keys

Instead of flat metal keys that operate mechanically with cuts on the top and bottom, transponder (a portmanteau of responder and transmitter) keys have an electronic microchip in their key heads. When the key is inserted into a vehicle that utilizes transponder technology, the chip sends out an unintentional message to a receiver located near the ignition switch. If the chip is programmed to do this it will trigger the engine to switch on. Transponder chips are made to prevent car theft and that is why the majority of modern cars have them.

In World War II, coded messages were sent over radio frequencies to determine if an aircraft was hostile or friendly. The same concept was later applied to keys for cars, with General Motors creating the first transponder chip key in 1985 for its Corvette model. Since then, they've been used on the majority of new vehicles, and can also be retrofitted to older models.

If your car has this kind of security, then you should always carry an extra key in case of emergency, since the chip will only work correctly if it is read. This is not foolproof. Some people have found ways to fool this system. They come with kits and tutorials that explain how to disable the transponder using wires and electrical relays.

Proximity keys

Proximity keys are one of the most recent keyless entry technology, and are becoming more popular on a variety of vehicles. The key fob is carried in a pocket, or bag and used to unlock the car. The key fob then communicates with the car, disengaging the immobiliser, allowing the engine to begin.

There are a few disadvantages for proximity key systems though. If the fob of your key is damaged or lost, it is unable to be used to start your vehicle. It could be expensive to hire a locksmith or dealer to replace it. The fobs are also powered by batteries, and so they'll have to be periodically replaced.

The proximity key technology has the disadvantage of breaking the cause and effect cycle that we are all familiar with when using physical keys. When you use a traditional key and the lock opens, you are aware that you have the key. You must be within a certain distance to activate a proximity-sensing keys.

Despite these disadvantages the proximity keys are a great option for drivers who want to keep themselves from locking out of their cars. If you have a proximity key, you should always have a backup key in case of emergency. Contact your local Pop-Alock for a quote on the services and prices.

Keyless Entry Systems

The days of storing a spare key outside the home are long gone and landlords can now provide tenants with better security by installing the keyless entry system. These systems are synced to back-end programs and allow landlords to track entry and exit. Furthermore these systems make it easier for tenants to enter the property in case an emergency.

Keyless entry works by sending encrypted signals to a receiver inside the car. The receiver receives the signal and opens or turns off your car. It also detects a driver's presence and adjust the vehicle's settings according to their preferences. For example, if a driver is carrying bags in their hands, the system will recognize this and shut the doors.

Certain keyless entry systems may be vulnerable to attacks, despite being extremely secure. A replay attack, for example, is when the remote control signal sent by the device is recorded and sent again at a later time. However, this can be thwarted by including in the keyless entry system an algorithm that ensures that every transmission is distinct from previous ones.

A keyless entry system has the advantage that it doesn't require you to change locks each time a tenant moves out. This is a significant cost of the unit turnover process and it is sensible for landlords to avoid this expense whenever it is possible. If you have a keyless system, all you need to do is reset the code. This is much faster and simpler than changing the lock.
