Are you a home cook who enjoys the convenience of gas cooktops but needs an oven to bake in? Discover a dual fuel range cooker that has the best of both worlds.

ovens-and-hobs-logo-png-original.jpgGas cooktops are favored by many home chefs who have experience in the kitchen due to their superior temperature control. They also allow them to use advanced cooking techniques, such as charring. These stoves are expensive, particularly when you need an additional gas hook-up as well as an electrician for installation.

What is a 13amp plug?

If you have a dual fuel range cooker (also known as an electric and gas oven), then you'll need an appropriate 13 amp plug. The plug should be wired by a licensed electrician into the cooker ring.

This assures that the current that flows through the plug is secure and not too high which could cause an electrical fire risk. The current is controlled by a fuse within the plug. The fuse will blow when it is overloaded. This protects the appliance from an overload of electricity.

The fuse is rated at 13 amps, which is shown on top of the plug. This is the maximum amount of current that the plug could carry without damaging the appliance or heating the socket. It is important that when replacing fuses you always use the same rated amps as the original. You run the risk of overheating a socket if you replace a fuse with an unrelated rating.

A 13 amp fuse is likely to be a ceramic type that is extremely durable and can withstand the extreme temperatures generated by a range cooker. Ceramic is also fire-resistant, which makes it a better choice than other types of fuse.

There are several ways that a 13 amp plug could be installed. It may be wired to an existing live socket. the flex is then connected to it by either a screw or a jaw-type cord clamp. The plug is then pushed firmly into place and tightened, ensuring that the clamp is secure.

Before connecting the wires you might need to take off the wiring diagram on cardboard which is placed over the pins of certain plugs. The wires must be trimmed to the right length, because when they are too long, they could be crushed when the plug covers are replaced. The earth wire should be the longest to ensure that it is connected prior to the line and neutral pins.

How do I connect a 13amp plug?

The vast majority of dual fuel range cookers sold in UK are equipped with a 13 amp plug. This is vital because ovens draw a large amounts of current, while the standard plug sockets have a 10-amp rating.

In general new appliances should be fitted with a plug at the point-of-sale. This is in order to be in compliance with the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety Regulations) 1994. Older appliances may not have a plug connected and this is the problem.

The first step to take when connecting a cooktop to an existing plug socket is to make sure that the fuse rating in the fuse box is in line with that of the plug. This is crucial because a fuse that is not properly sized could pose a risk.

It is also important to check that the fuse is installed within the cartridge and that there isn't any movement within it. Next up is to prepare the flex to be used. Remove the sheathing to expose the three insulated conductors. Next nick the sheathing at the entry point to the plug (beyond the cord grip) using a utility knife without penetrating the individual insulated conductors. The nick should be large enough that the sheathing can split and enlarge the nick as it is pulled back to reveal the cable underneath. Cut off the excess sheathing leaving about 40mm beyond the flex.

This flex should be placed over the plug, with the earth terminal on top and the live and neutral terminals at the bottom. The sheathing around each pin is removed using colored conductors as a reference. The internal cable is then inserted into the terminal using the cord grip. If the plug has a screw-type cord clamp loosen it and pull back the insulation to reveal the copper conductors. Finally, connect each conductor that is insulated to the proper terminal (starting with the earth before neutral, and then the live) by using the channel they are running through the plug.

What is the maximum current draw of a 13amp plug?

The maximum current draw for 13amp plugs at 230volts is 3kw. This is a lot of power, but the standard fuse in the UK plugtop will not fail until the cable has reached to a dangerous level. It is essential to be aware of the amount of electricity you use in your kitchen, as an unfit plug or socket can lead to an explosion.

The ceramic fuses that are used in plugtops measure around 25mm and are rated for mains voltages of 240V. The fuses will bear a BS Kitemark or a similar mark on the side, and they will contain sand. There are also cheaper glass or plastic alternatives, however they should not be used with a live plug, except if you don't want to blow up the fuse and possibly get electrocuted!

Most dual fuel range cookers sold in the UK need to be hard-wired and will not plug directly into the wall socket. They are usually connected to a separate cooker ring circuit which is only suitable for appliances that consume up to 20 amps.

You can verify the ring circuit in your home by checking the fuse box or by asking an electrician nearby. You can ask them if the sockets are connected to the same ring or if they're separate. They should also be able tell you if there is a dedicated circuit to power your oven.

What is the maximum current draw of a cooker switch?

There is plenty of confusion over what the maximum current draw of a cooker switch actually is. Most cookers are hard-wired and connected to a dedicated oven-ring circuit, not an ordinary socket. This is due to the fact that they often consume far more than 20 amps of power each time the electric oven and gas hob are being used.

You will not find dual fuel range cookers that can be fitted in a standard socket since this could pose an extremely high risk of fire and violate electrical regulations. A licensed electrician must always install new electrics in the kitchen to an oven. They will also ensure that the load of the oven and the hob does not exceed the circuit's power supply capacity.

The benefits of a dual fuel range cooker are the receptive heat of a gas cooktop along with the precision of an electric oven. They are therefore popular with both chefs and home cooks. If you're looking to test different cooking techniques such as searing and charcoaling, a cheap dual fuel range cookers fuel range cooker is the best choice.
