1. Smeg BCC02
Designed by Milan-based firm Deep Design, this sleek, compact and striking machine combines the unique retro style of the brand with modern technology. It handles every step of the coffee-making process - from grinding beans and then tamping them into a puck, to texturing milk and dispensing the correct amount of coffee - meaning you can create high-quality barista hot drinks by pressing a button.
The machine also features an attractive brushed aluminum front and is available in black, red or taupe, meaning it's a great fit for most kitchen designs. It's not free of flaws however. Most reviewers found that it was a bit expensive for a cup-to- bean maker (and isn't equipped with an ice cube).
There were many positive reviews about this machine's ease of use as well as the quality of its coffee. The digital display is intuitive and provides an easy-to-follow guideline and feedback throughout the making process, allowing you to perfect your drink every time. It will even prompt you to alter the size of the grind if it's not quite right. This model is ideal for those who enjoy milky drinks. The steam wand can be adjusted to the right and left to fit a variety of drinking vessels, with the exception of Viking drinking horns. We were awestruck by the speed and effectiveness of the frothing process, as well. It creates a delicious, full-flavoured espresso with a great crema.
The BCC02 is an excellent all-rounder that's quiet, efficient and offers superb value for money, especially at its current price of PS499. Its only real flaw is that it doesn't offer the same level customisation as other bean-to-cup machines we have tried. It comes with a 15 bar pump, rather than the usual 19 bars, which isn't as good bean to cup coffee machine for making high-quality espressos.
