Lost Keys

The cost for replacing keys stolen or lost is $30 per key and must be paid by the responsible key holder.

Broken Keys

After a few years of using it's not uncommon for keys to break. If your key has a break inside the lock, you'll have to replace it. If the remainder of the lock's key is in good condition, you may be able repair it.

A paperclip can grip the broken piece from both sides and force it out. If the broken piece isn't trapped too far in the lock you can try using a pair pliers. If the key is broken close to the lock, you may need an "key extraction" tool with a bar on it with the same barb as screws. The bar is inserted into the locking mechanism and then twisted to dig the barb into it. This will pull out the seat key fob replacement.

If you have the proper tools, it's not difficult to replace keys on keyboards. You'll need the key cap (the plastic piece that sits over the switch) as well as a keypad and a key-retention clip. Key caps are made of plastic or metal posts that are placed into the slots on the switch. To replace a key cap take care to remove the internal components of the key, and then note their locations so that you can put them back later. You may have to clean the keyboard first by rubbing alcohol.

Fobs Not Working

It might seem absurd to imagine that your key fob may require regular maintenance, but it isn't unusual for them to stop working at some point. In some cases it's a simple one, such as dead batteries. If you've changed the batteries, but your fob still not working, it's time to look for a different solution.

The buttons may also wear out, which is another common reason why a keypad stops working. When you press the button on your fob the contacts send coded messages to the receiver inside your car which communicates what action you would like the key to perform. If these contacts are worn out and the button is not working, it may not work at all or it may send different messages than what you wanted to.

You can fix this problem quickly by using a car key to open your doors or start your engine. You can reset the fob by following the process in your car's owner's manual (check online to find instructions for your particular model).

If changing the batteries or reprogramming does not work, it may be required to replace or repair your key fob. Modern keys have to be programmed using your car's Vehicle Identification Number. The wear and tear can corrupt this programming.

Transponder Chips

The transponder chips on your car key are an important part of the car key. They send out the signal using a unique frequency when the key is inserted in the ignition. The car's device recognizes the number and is sure it's you. The engine won't be able to start if the device in the car doesn't recognise the signal, which is security measure to prevent thieves from wiring cars and driving them away.

The chip is not any batteries and therefore does not require charging or replaced. It must however be programmed into the car by someone with access to the car's ECU, which is why it's crucial to bring your keys to a locksmith.

There are a variety of transponder chips on the market, with the most popular being Rolling Code and Crypto. Key blanks come with heads made of plastic that have slots that hold the glass transponder or ampoule, it is then placed in a carrier (or sleeve) on the back of the bow (plastic head). The photo below is of one of these sleeve-carriers from a Ford key here. With a PVC pipe cutter, or a different method, you can remove the sleeve off of a damaged Ford key.

A normal transponder key is more expensive than a regular metal key because of the chip however, it is less expensive than a fob and smart key. The cost of these keys depends on your vehicle's make and model.311135906_1281855972636056_2987376612771239945_nlow.jpg
