Lolita's Personality

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who love to play, interact, and climb. They require at least 2 to 3 hours per day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They love going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. They are not only a great pet but they are also a great companion for children.

The birds can be quite loud, despite their adoration for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to people living near. They can be heard making high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be a nuisance in apartments and condos or near children who may be frightened by their noise.

This species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. This is why DNA testing is the only method of determining sex. Once sex is known, pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.

Lolita's care

For a long time, activists have been pleading for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, activists hoped that Lolita would have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to go back to the sea.

The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her by putting her through head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, making her lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also put her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita Blue & Gold Macaw as a cousin of theirs, pledged to develop plans with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could live for the rest of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the actual ocean not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that are close to their family members until death. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for 40 years. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

The decision comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean and perhaps even meet the orca thought to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the beloved whale that died on Friday as a result of what was thought to be a kidney issue.
