Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists believed that Lolita would have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to the sea.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her by putting her through head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also place her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, vowed to develop an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to open water eventually. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, where she could stay for the rest of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been implemented, lolita blue & gold macaw (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. Lolita's Health
Lolita is gorgeous, but her health is declining. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and want to see that she is returned to the wild. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has battled chronic illnesses and a debilitating illness that has left her in a vulnerable condition.
The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current state of health. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These show that she is aging quickly and her health is deteriorating.
It is not clear what health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor is not required to share the information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an important part in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than ever before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to transfer the whale out of her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she could swim deep in the ocean and even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
