The Benefits and Drawbacks of a 3 Wheeled Pushchair

If you regularly walk through rough terrain or would like to run on a treadmill, a three-wheeled pushchair is the perfect choice. They are a great option if want a buggy that will handle all types of terrain, from busy streets to tracks in the woods.

For more manoeuvrability, look for a model with locking or swivelling front wheels. Larger wheels, both front and back offer an easier ride on varying terrains.

Manoeuvrability

A 3-wheel pushchair is an excellent option for those looking to move easily. The wheels are set close to each other, allowing the chassis to move and turn much more easily than a standard four wheel pushchair, making them perfect for busy streets and shopping. Some even have a small pair of front wheels that can be locked and swivelled for additional maneuverability when required. The Roma Atlas, for example, has two wheels positioned close to each other at the front and a clever lock that can swivel to give the ability to maneuver like three wheels, with added stability.

Many of our most popular 3 wheelers can be transformed from pram, stroller, car seat, and toddler seat as your child grows. This is a great option if you're planning on travelling as a family or for frequent trips to the shops. The Baby Jogger Nipper is a great illustration. It features Hauck airwheels that are XL, a 360-degree swivel lockable wheel, and a suspension that allows it to be used on all terrains.

The ickle Bubba Nipper is a different alternative. It's an all-terrain stroller that has large puncture-proof tyres and a fantastic suspension that allows it to go on both off-road adventures and smooth city pavements. It's suitable for use from birth (in the seat unit that is reversible or with a compatible carrycot) and comes with a convenient one-handed fold that is ideal for storage in the boot and airport travel.

The right wheels for your pushchair is important dependent on the location you'll use it the most. Moulded wheels are great for the city but not on more rugged terrain. If you plan on taking your pushchair off of pavements choose tyres with air in them which are sometimes referred to as pneumatic tyres that are capable of coping with rough terrain.

If you're looking for a model that can be used in both urban and rural locations, then look no further than our top 3 wheel strollers-rated Bugaboo Fox 5 All Terrain pushchair. It's got all the great suspension and big wheels of an all-terrain model. However, it's also an excellent urban pushchair with a super lightweight 3 wheel stroller frame, a lockable front wheel and a single-handed fold.

Stability

There are a number of features you can check for that will increase the stability of your buggy. For instance, certain models feature a swivelling front wheel that can be locked in place for extra stability on rough terrain. This can be especially useful if you are going to be using your pushchair off-road, or for running, as it gives you the confidence to go off on different surfaces easily.

Suspension is a great feature to ensure stability. It can make your buggy more comfortable to ride, both for the baby and you, particularly on uneven terrain. Some brands even provide the option of swapping out tyres of different brands to allow you to tailor the performance of your pushchair to suit the type of terrain you will be riding it on.

Consider investing in a 3 wheel stroller and car seat, check out here,-wheeled pushchair that has air-filled tires for an infant stroller that can take on any terrain. These wheels will offer smoother rides over bumps and are less likely to break than solid wheels. These wheels will allow you to use your buggy on surfaces that are not paved and can be used on various surfaces, including grass as well as sand and mud.

All-terrain pushchairs are generally a little wider than standard pushchairs, but there are plenty of excellent options that won't compromise on the stability or maneuverability. One of our favorites, the UPPAbaby Ridge, has numerous impressive features which allow it to be used for off-road walking as well as jogging once your child reaches a certain age. It has large, foam-filled never-flat tyres, adjustable suspension and a quick one-handed fold.

Another great all-terrain pushchair is the Bugaboo Fox 5 - this is similar to the UPPAbaby Ridge. It has an excellent suspension, large puncture-proof tyres and an easy fold. It's also compatible with a broad selection of car seats and can be used as a carrycot or infant carrier as well. It's a little heavier than other 3 wheel stroller with infant car seat-wheelers, but it's still a great choice for parents who wish to have their pushchair capable of traveling across any terrain.

Weight

The drawback of strollers with three wheels is that they are heavy, especially if you are required to traverse bumpy terrain and kerbs. The larger rear wheels of a 3 wheeler pushchair-wheeler contribute to the overall weight, which is heavier than the 4-wheeler. This means that you'll need more strength when lifting them.

If you require a pushchair that can handle rough terrain and rocky tarmac the all-terrain model might be worth a look. These models usually have specific features like strong suspension systems and large puncture-proof tires. Manufacturers are increasingly creating strollers that are all-terrain and have tyres that are filled with gel or foam to prevent them from going flat.

UPPAbaby’s Ridge stroller is all-terrain and has many features that are child-friendly and will help it tackle different terrains easily. It includes the ability to lock the front wheel, a quick and easy one-handed fold, a large basket, and an adjustable handlebar. MFM reviewer Becky found that the Ridge was "very great for trails in the woods as well as gravel tracks and market town cobbles".

iCandy is another brand that offers a selection of all terrain pushchairs. Their latest all-terrain model, the Core, is suitable from birth and can be used with a carrycot as well as car seat adaptors. The iCandy Core is packed with features that make it an excellent stroller for all terrains. It has large and foam-filled tyres which never flatten, and a fantastic suspension. The Core is a bit heavier than other pushchairs that are all-terrain, but it's still light enough to be maneuverable on rougher ground.

Folding

All-terrain models are an excellent option for those who want an all-terrain pushchair that can withstand rough terrain. This type of pushchair will have large wheels both front and back, which will help you navigate rough terrain off-road. They'll often have a more durable suspension and larger puncture-resistant tyres to prevent them from getting blocked by sticks, grass or mud.

The Mountain Buggy Ridge is a good model of a pushchair of this type. This all-terrain pushchair has many impressive features, like a the smooth suspension, the spacious basket, one handed steering, and a quick one-handed folding. It's also compatible with a carrycot as well as a car seat (with adaptors) and can be used from birth or even from six months old with the world-facing seat unit.
