How to Replace an audi car key case G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to audi connect key with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are several pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, but i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They're cheap and easy to find, especially if they're a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi key replacement cost since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine is spinning. If this sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to control fuel, timig, and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points.
